Moodle for Online Teaching and Learning
Room: B22
Moodle is an online Learning Management System (LMS) designed for teaching and learning. Moodle provides a platform for delivering learning sequences which can incorporate a variety of tools such as forums, quizzes and tracking grades as well as resources like documents, images and videos. Moodle allows teachers to provide learning materials to students 24/7 in a safe, password-protected environment.

Needs to be interesting, engaging and interactive

Today we will:

  1. Introduce Moodle - Chan building, web based 24/7, great community support
  2. Look at existing Moodle courses: Indo and Japanese Beginners Stage 1, Geography, Philosophy
  3. Moodle can be used for fully ONLINE or BLENDED course material: a whole course, a term’s work, a unit’s work, extra resources, homework, revision material, links location . . .
  4. Moodle makes Personalised/Individualised learning easy to achieve, students progress at their own pace through resources and activities
  5. Demo – editing on, blocks, eye to hide, pencil to edit add friend to course – admin block/Assign Roles/ Choose Student or Teacher – search, add them!
  6. Participants Practice - Open your Sandpit course in ourcourses.ntschools.net using your ntschools username and password
  7. Have a look through the resources in the ‘Useful Links’ block (top left)
  8. Demo how to make a colourful Label ‘Add Resource – Insert a Label – write text and colour it - Save at bottom of page’

  2. Demo Create a forum ‘Add Activity – choose Forum – name it – write description - Save at bottom of page’ then ‘Add a topic’ ‘reply’
Why use a tool like this?

  2. Demo add a Single File Upload – ‘Add Activity – single file upload – choose title and description and marks, then save at bottom of page’

  4. Demo Insert a Scootle TLF object ‘Add Resource – Scootle Item – ‘Search’ – find the resource and copy it’s TLF ID – eg. L3425 – paste into course - Save at bottom of page’
Why use?

  2. Demo Create a Webpage – Add a Resource – Webpage’ name it, give it a summary, put some teacher talk instructions into the main text field.

  2. Change roles ‘Switch Role To . . and select Student
  3. Demo Embed a You Tube video into the recently created Webpage – hit the edit button – get embed code and paste into HTML view of webpage
Why use?
  1. Demo Adding a Link to a website of interest ‘Add Resource – Link to a file or website – name it – give it a brief summary – put the copied link into the gap, open in new window, save at bottom of page
